The Fruit Flush Diet: Does Sangria Provide a Full Day's Worth of Fruit?

Share |

The Fruit Flush Diet, occasionally referred to as just the Fruit Diet promises that you will lose around ten pounds in three days. Even the diet's author understands and acknowledges that much of this is probably going to be water weight and trust me, if you are going to be eating fruit every 2 hours for 3 days, you will be losing some water weight! On that note, can we not all agree that the word "flush" should not be included in anything that we are supposed to regard as healthy?

The Fruit Flush Diet: The Beginning
The Fruit Flush Diet was written by Jay Robb who is a personal trainer. He is also a certified clinical nutritionist, however he is not registered as one. The working theory that he came up with for his diet plan is simple: fruit helps the body to break down and then to flush out the toxins that we build up every day by eating over processed foods, junk foods and alcohol.

The diet, which consists of a total of two steps done over the course of three days, includes some lean protein so that lean muscle mass is spared during the weight loss and to help the body continue to burn fat.

On Your Mark: To get started on your three day fruit flush, you spend day one drinking only protein shakes and water. By doing that, the theory says that you will rev up your metabolism and get it primed for some serious fat burning. Day One's calorie count is around 900-1000 calories per day, with 100-125 grams of protein.

Get Set: On days two and three of the Fruit Flush diet, you start by eating fresh fruit of any variety every two hours while you are awake. You can also have an evening meal which should include raw vegetables and a small portion of lean protein or a small protein shake. The calorie count for days two and three is slightly higher with a lowered protein count. If you do not think you could handle a three day fruit flush, another option is the fourteen day flush, which has a slightly higher calorie count.

Go: And go you will. Fruits, while they contain a number of very important vitamins and nutrients are also mostly fiber and water which you should know means that whatever goes into your mouth, is on a rocket fast trip, and heading down south. Got a big date for the weekend? Cancel your Fruit Flush or cancel your date because trust me honey, no man is ever that understanding.

The Good, the Bad

Every diet plan, even the most horrendous (this is not even close) has its good points and its bad points. The good points of the Fruit Flush Diet are:

  • Brief "diet" plan that may actually bring about fast weight loss for some people.
  • Another option is available - which is the 14 day fruit diet which has slightly more calories to it and includes a wider range of foods. While it will take longer to see results, it is ultimately safer for the dieter to use.
And the bad:
  • Calorie count is too low to be considered safe, even for only three days. Plans that are this low in calories should only be taken on under the direct supervision of a doctor.
  • No need for a "detox" because the average, healthy body takes care of that by itself in the liver, kidneys and colon
  • Excessive protein intake can lead to strain on the kidneys
  • Diet plan is basically unsafe for diabetics and other health conditions could preclude this diet for others as well
  • May not be safe or effective for long term weight loss at all, temporary weight loss will only be from water weight.
  • Exercise is not recommended during the flush because of the excessively low calorie count involved.
  • There are no clinical studies that show that the fruits do any of kind of flush or toxin breakdown within the body.
