Nutri-System Diet

If you are like many of the millions of people who start and fail a diet because it is just too much work to deal with, the Nutri-system diet may just the answer you are looking for. Thinking of all of the work and planning, not to mention the sheer math involved in a diet meal, it is no wonder that many of us just shuffle off to graze at the snack bin and vow to worry about the diet "tomorrow". And since technically tomorrow never does come, it is up to us to eventually yank our heads out of the …refrigerator and finally do something about our ever growing waistline once and for all. Cue the trumpets here, boys: enter the Nutri-system Diet to the rescue. Helping the math impaired and the will power challenged alike!

A Little Nutri-System History
The Nutri-System Diet was started originally in 1972 and has been changed a number of times over the years, to keep up with the latest research and medical news. In 2008, for instance, the diet was given a makeover to include a more advanced plan that bumps up the amount of soluble fiber, decreases fat and optimizes protein intake for faster, safer weight loss.

The Advanced Plan is also meant to reduce hunger by keeping you feeling full longer and curb cravings. The basic premise of the plan has been unchanged however: the food that you eat is mainly pre-packaged, portion controlled meals that are supplemented by fresh produce and dairy products from your own grocery store.

Meant to keep you from having to fuss with menus, cooking or counting calories, the prepackaged foods are selected by you, so there is no whining about not liking your meal allowed - you picked it, you paid for it and now you eat it!

The meals arrive in a one month shipment (actually 28 days worth with an option to order a free week's worth of meals), you simply store them in the pantry, a closet or under your bed until you are ready to zap them and eat them.

Nutri-System Pros
Okay, so who does not love the idea of not having to count or do math? If you have ever slipped off a pump at the dinner table, to help you count carb or fat grams then you know that this is one major bonus factor. You never have to count anything- you just pop open the meal, nuke it and that is it. Dinner is served, madam. (Or, monsieur, the plan works for men as well). As you go through this part of the program, you get an idea about what an actual portion size should look like which is helpful when you complete the diet, and start eating regular foods again.

The foods included in the program are healthy with lower sodium, lower saturated and trans-fats and more whole grains. There is also a much wider variety of foods than you would imagine that you can choose your menu from.

Included in the program is a 12 week guide called the "Mindset Makeover" by Gary Foster, Ph.D. who is an obesity expert at Temple University. There is also access to counselors by telephone so that you can reach out when you feel as if you need a little bit of support.

Exercise is strongly recommended and can be done by following online programs or through demo CD's. The program encourages everyone to work within their own fitness level only.

The plan has plenty of variety with over 120 foods to select from, most with 55% carbohydrates, 25% proteins and 20% fat. The program can be fully adjustable and customized to take into account age, sex and general health status before you even start.

Nutri-System Cons
For all of its positive aspects, the Nutri-system Diet does have its weaknesses as well. The question of whether the weight that is lost while eating prepackaged, pre-portioned foods can be maintained after returning to regular meals is a big one. While there are behavioral tools given, if the dieter did not work very hard at addressing the issues that drive the overeating behavior in the first place, it is not likely that they will, after being allowed to cruise on autopilot for so long either.

While for the most part the foods are considered to be fairly nutritious, the issue may be that there is just not enough of it to be effective. The meals range around the 250-300 calorie range, but some dip to half that at only 150 calories. Experts agree that this amount is proper for a snack, but not for a meal.

Finally, because it is a temporary plan, it may only equal temporary weight loss as well. While you are on the diet plan, you are not thinking toward the future. Thirty days of meals are not going to teach good portion control and undo a lifetime of bad habits.
